kazou- 02-02-2008
Hi, I'm Kazou. Like Topher, I love the idea of a board that discourages some of the cutesy/not-so-cutesy traits other boards wallow in so I was overjoyed to see Becca and Mallory start a forum for those of us not into couple nicknames, abbreviated texting and non-capped netspeak. Way to go, gals!
Unlike so many, I didn't have the privilege of watching soaps as a child since my parents were against sugary cereal and daytime television. Now as an adult I can indulge in my soap addiction and Lucky Charms rebellion without a lecture on polluting my mind and body. (I've actually grown away from my Lucky Charms habit but still haven't been able to shake GH, even though I know both are truly BAD for me!)
I used to watch GH and AMC but gave up AMC out boredom just prior to TPTB killing Dixie off with a plate of poisoned pancakes. I find a soap can be infuriating yet still suck me in (witness GH) but once the writing slides downhill into boring, it's easy to take it off the DVR schedule and from there, there's no going back. Since the new AMC writers have continued their deification of Babe and Krystal, the whore/madonnas of Pine Valley, it's been easy to resist the temptation to reprogram AMC back onto my DVR. I do peek at it every once in a while if SoapNet's playing in the background but although I was tempted to tune back in for Rebecca Budig (whom I love), Fronz's "real Greenlee" campaign turned my stomach so completely that I just didn't have the heart. At this point the only thing that could make me tune in religiously is if Tad dropped 20 pounds and admitted to torturing and burying another human being alive. Watching him pass judgment on Adam is just too depressing when he no longer has the dimples or moral high ground on which to stand.
Luckily GH hasn't bored me yet -- it just pisses me off which at least keeps me tuning in. Guza must be the Howard Stern of daytime because he sure aggravates a lot of people yet GH is ABC's highest rated soap. (And yes, we all know Guza is every bit as much of a vulgar sexist as Stern. Hrrmmm ...twin sons of different mothers??)
I have SoapNet so end up listening with half an ear to OLTL, Y&R and Days occasionally (just enough to know who's who) but might tune into Days a bit more religiously now that Tamara Braun is scheduled to air.
Looks like a great board ladies! Thanks so much for setting it up for us.
Becky- 02-15-2008
Hi, I'm Becky. I'm a soapaholic.
I remember staying at my aunt's house when I was little. She used to watch Days at lunchtime, and I thought it was stupid. Then Watergate happened and it took over TV and I longed for a return to the stupidity of Days.
When I was a tweener in the late 70's/early 80's the Luke & Laura thing was a big deal and I started watching GH during the summers, which also led to AMC and OLTL.
Those 4 soaps comprise the entirety of my on-again/off-again relationship with soaps, though I did also watch Loving and Port Charles and have a vague familiarity with Ryan's Hope, The Edge of Night, The Bold and the Beautiful, Y&R and Santa Barbara.
The VCR was invented when I was junior high and then I could watch the soaps year-round. Unfortunately that began an addiction that I still cannot fully control, though I do make valiant efforts.
OLTL is the only show I actually watch more than I fast forward, but I do still keep up with Days and GH, mostly to enjoy the Serial Drama mock fest that is so deserved.

Hi everyone!
My name is Joy. I started watching ABC soaps around the age of 7 thanks to my granny. I recently started watching Y&R. I am a wife, mother (4 kids, 1 set of twins) and I work full time; yet I make time for my soaps. My husband doesn't understand what I see in soaps to make me watch them so religiously. With the state of the storylines lately, I tend to wonder also.
Happy to be here.
Amello- 03-02-2008
Hey I'm Mike, but you all can call me Amello. Hence, the username. I started to get addicted to DAYS when I was about 3 or so because my mom did and still does watch it. Kristen/Eileen Davidson got me hooked and Sami/Alison Sweeney kept me hanging on even longer. It is my favourite soap of all time. I alos watch OLTL regularly because it's actually GOOD. For the rest of the soaps I breifly no the happenings and watch when something that interests me is about to happen.
Jodi- 03-08-2008

| You guys probably have seen our bios, and if you read the blog you know I watch Days and GH. But I also used to watch Another World and Santa Barbara. I found a few old tapes from my high school years recently (late 80s to early 90s, sob), and we're going to start a new feature with those, recapping "vintage" episodes -- complete with screencaps. If I can fit Mary Beth Evans' legendary bangs, the Corys' awesomeness, and the Capwells' disfunctionality in screencaps. |
^ Is it possible to worship Serial Drama anymore than I already do? Yes, it is!
My name is Cat and I am a secret soap fan. By day a white-collar officebot. By night (well, some nights) a TiVoer of soaps which I tend to watch while preparing dinner, my remote safely tucked in a pocket so that I can FF at a second's notice. FFing soaps has become necessary when you watch GH as I do. I also watch B&B and Y&R and am tempted to get back into Days, even though Hackley is back to writing it. I watched OLTL during her run until I could no longer stomach it (only Todd & Evangeline kept me watching).
First started watching Santa Barbara (Julia!) and Days (Patch & Kayla!) back when I was a young 'un in 1987/88. I lived in suburban Boston which, incomprehensibly, did not screen AW. This was back in the day when NBC Daytime was not the laughingstock on life support it is now. In fact, it seemed to be hitting its stride as the most clever, witty, romantic, swoony, exciting and cutting-edge of soap stables. IMO.
My mom was into Y&R and B&B because they were the most glamorous and "adult," for lack of a better word. As Santa Barbara disappeared into a hack-infested mess and swift cancellation, I kept up with film noir Y&R, campy B&B and amazing Days (Carly & Lawrence, swoon) once in a while. However, I was starting college at that point. Plus 90210 was becoming big and my friends and I got into that for a bit (Team Brenda!).
And then GH, which had pulled me in with its Duke & Anna voodoo and Quartermaine magic during HS, went stratospheric with another Brenda (around 93?) and I was, like, well, I can't not watch GH!
I think my attitude towards soap viweing thereafter pretty much resembled a lot of people's already here. Exhilaration, excitement, nolstalgia followed by a slow, gradual decline towards regret, disappointment, glimmers of hope. And plenty of venting.
OK, am rambling so I'll stop now.
Kiran- 04-15-2008
Hey, my name is Kiran. I started watching Soaps since before I could remember. My stepmom was big into them, and my dad used to watch a lot of Days of Our Lives while recovering from his accident and I think at one time or another I've watched them all, while not being really regular to any, just whatever the mood strikes me. I suppose I have the most loyalty to General Hospital, although that gets -*test*-('")ed a lot, and sadly Guiding Light the soap no one but me watches.
I think the reason I like this forum and this blog is the lack of "I'M RIGHT YOUR WRONG!" mentality that happens in a lot of boards, along with the fact that a lot of other boards so completely associate a character with an actor, that they start hating on the actor for random reasons and I've never liked that. I mean I may hate Lulu, but I think JMB is talented and pretty, and Greenlee is pretty much ruined but I love Rebecca Budig to a sad degree.
LaurenLo- 04-18-2008
Hi! As I am typing this, my beloved hockey team is about to exit the playoffs, so this will be hard.
I remember my mom watching AMC and AW when I was a kid. My earliest memories are Ellen Wheeler as Marley, Silver Kane, and Jeremy bedding Erica right after he married Natalie.
I really got into those two shows in 1991, when I was home from school for three months with mono. I think being home with mono and watching tv all day solidified my couch potato status. If I never got mono, I'd probably be a really rich doctor or lawyer or something by now.
But, alas, I am not. My former best friend (you know the type, ditches you as soon as a guy looks her way) introduced me to GH in the early 90's. It was during the who-did-it of Bill Eckert's wife. I remember Jagger and Karen and Joe Atkins and Gerald Anthony as AJ. But I really got hooked during the Stone/Robin storyline. That was run off the school bus must-see tv for me. And I've been watching ever since.
I am a diehard Elizabeth fan. So much so, that I even convinced myself I wanted her back with JY's Lucky. How naive! I went on a hiatus around when they ditched Liz and Jason for Jason and Sonny's sister. I did like the Liz/Ric pairing, but Sonny's sister killed the show for me. I picked up around when Brenda came back in 2002, and again when Liz was a surrogate for Jax and Sonny's sister, but came back for good (?) when Liz and Lucky got married in 2005.
I keep up with pretty much ever soap via the Internet and Soap Opera Digest.
Oh, and I am the type of person who gets outraged if said Soap Opera Digest is not in my mailbox every Friday. At least, until I saw people posting magazine spoilers on Thursdays. I've never gotten it on a Thursday!
Oh, and I will forever love Cameron Webber.
Norma B- 04-23-2008
Hi, I'm Norma, and 85 year old grandmother of three with nothing better to do than watch soaps all day.
My favorites are the ABC three because I still can't program my VCR. But, I have figured out this internet thing with the help of my granddaughter.
I have been reading Serial Drama ever since the beginning, way back in 2006.
Evil but Twinless and Promising Ingenue are so witty and insightful - I love their take on most things.
As someone who was around during the "good old days" of love in the afternoon, I am in agreement about the sad state of affairs these days.
I usually just lurk and listen, but I might try posting now and again
My favorite character is Jackson Montgomery from AMC
Vanrainmom- 05-02-2008
Hi there!
I have, of late, become more of a Serial Drama addict, than a GH addict, especially these days. The humour here (yes humour - I am Canadian, so I spell funny) is stellar! I don't profess to be anywhere near as clever a poster as most of you, but I enjoy a good monitor spraying comment as much as the next person.
GH has managed to turn a mild mannered house frau, like me, into a teeth gnashing, remote throwing, shrew.
Perhaps it's from a desperate lack of "Love in the Afternoon", or perhaps it's because I am annoyed with myself for not caring that Micheal is in a coma...either way, I am very happy to be here.
I look forward to posting with you.
ashley96- 07-11-2008
