There is a whole lot of WTF going on with this year's Emmy nominees. Seriously, most of the time I spent reading this list, my expression consisted of complete underwhelment or a very unattractive jaw drop with a combination of shock, frustration, and outrage.
The only really good thing about this list as a whole is the reappearance of DAYS' actors. I don't even know if a couple of them deserve it, but I'm so happy that someone, much less FOUR someones, is getting recognition.
My thoughts (in a nice bullet form that complements my OCD):
- To be fair, after first impressions, my outrage isn't so much based in quantity, but it's heavy on quality. The blatant snub of Kirsten Storms and the idea of referring to GH in any way as “outstanding” constitute my WTF-ness. Everything else is just: Eh. Not rage inducing, but not exactly outstanding either.
- I hope Van Hansis or Jesse Soffer win Younger Actor. Though Tom Pelphrey is undoubtedly a talented and charismatic actor, he chews far too much scenery for my taste (must be all that hanging around Kim Zimmer). And if I’m being honest, I don’t really know how Darin Brooks got a nomination, but I don’t care because I’m so over the moon DAYS has acting nominations (though I wish it were Blake Berris instead). Did Bryton McClure invent some sort of new and amazing acting technique innovating how to be engaged in a scene while serving as a soundboard for your on-screen partner without nodding off? Because that’s the only explanation for the appearance of his name on this list much less his baffling win last year.
- I’m cool with Jennifer Landon and Rachel Melvin’s nominations. Both are good actresses that deserve it (though I think Jen Landon doesn’t quite measure up to her immense hype, but then again she has so much of it, who could?). But Vail Bloom, Emily O'Brien, and Tammin Sursok? !!! How did this happen? Kirsten Storms has been ROBBED (as has GL's Marcy Rylan, but to a lesser extent). This category was all but won for her and it peeves me off more than Kristian Alfonso’s snub last year. By far the biggest outrage of this year’s Emmys.
- Supporting Actor is OK. Nothing for me to seethe over but nothing that makes me squeal with glee either (not that I do such things, of course). All are capable actors. Trent Dawson excels at humor and snark but has proven adept with drama as well though he is still woefully underused at ATWT despite back to back to back nominations. I enjoy Daniel Cosgrove on GL though I can’t give an accurate -*test*-('")ament to his acting ability as whenever he is on-screen I am so distracted by the pretty. As for Brian Kerwin, Kristoff St. John, and Greg Rikaart my only reaction is: Eh.
- Supporting Actress? Whatever. It’s OK, I guess, except that Alicia Minshew put in for supporting and she should probably be there given that she was on-screen nearly every freaking day in a lead storyline. Kelley Hensley and Gina Tognoni definitely deserve it and I have the same feeling about Judi Evans that I had with Darin Brooks. Thank goodness there is some NBC talent here.
- Lead Actor is just “eh” as well. Tony Geary? What is this, the Outstanding Lead Actor Award sponsored by HoneyBaked ham and Kraft cheese? Other than that, I’m good. The best part is the nomination of Thaao Penghlis. The very thought of his Emmy reel containing TONY ON A HORSE makes me squirm with delight. I firmly believe that this is the case and the sight of such fabulousness forced the Emmy voters to let in more DAYS actors. And, oh my goodness, can you imagine if they play that clip during the show when they announce the nominees’ names?! I think my television viewing life would peak at the awesomeness of it all!
- Lead Actress is the least objectionable with the exception of Nicole Forester. Seriously? Just…no.
- Ah, and Outstanding Drama. This had better go to OLTL because there is really no other option. I think Mallory has more than adequately covered my feelings about this atrocity in the main post so I won't attempt to elaborate on greatness. All I have to say is: Brilliant, with a side of WORD.
Now that the announcements are over, bring on the fashion (and the inevitable fug)! Can’t wait!
